A practical companion for spending a spring living in Basel rather than visiting it. From early April to mid-June you live in Gundeldingen, the quiet grid behind the railway station. The book tells you where to look for a home and what it costs, where the food comes from, where to run, how to move by tram and train, and what happens when the art world arrives in June.
We chose Basel. You live it.
This companion begins where the choice ended. Five places were weighed for a spring away; Basel finished first, and not by winning everything. It won on what the ordinary week could reach. The rest of the book hands that week to you.
You live in Gundeldingen, behind Basel SBB, in the interior blocks around Winkelriedplatz. You buy food at the Gundelitor and at two weekly markets. You run up to the Bruderholz from the front door, or take the tram to the Lange Erlen for the long, flat outing. You cross the footbridge into the old town, reach Germany on tram 8 and France on tram 3, and choose between two airports. You learn where to go if either of you needs a doctor, and what to do when Art Basel fills the city in June.
Six working maps show where you are. Six photographs, all taken by the author in September 2026, show what the week can look like. Research is current through 20 September 2026; the details that will change before a 2027 spring are listed in a box headed Confirm before booking.
Hoc est opus. Et satis est.
