An autumn away
September · October · November
Autumn at home is good. So the question changes. It is not what there is to escape, but what three ordinary months are worth when they are spent somewhere else.
The second edition asked a harder question of a stronger field. Basel returned as the standing answer against six challengers: Salt Lake City, Freiburg, Innsbruck, Quebec City, Annecy and Colmar. Four came through the mathematics with none established ahead of the others. The practical decision went to Salt Lake City · Sugar House.

Mathematical result: {Salt Lake City, Freiburg, Innsbruck, Quebec City}
Practical decision: Salt Lake City
Braces mean unordered, not tied. Below the leading four, Salt Lake City is established ahead of Basel, Annecy and Colmar, and Freiburg and Basel ahead of Colmar. The practical decision was made between the two finalists on housing: Salt Lake City could demonstrably provide the required home; Innsbruck's could not be demonstrated.

Second Edition · October 2026
The second Fall Practical Companion begins where the second edition ended. It is a guide to spending September, October and November living in Sugar House rather than visiting Salt Lake City: the house with room for guests, the ordinary Tuesday on foot, the park and the trail corridor, the canyons at their peak, the streetcar and the airport one train beyond, and the November test.

Six neighbourhoods were examined for the whole arc of the season. Basel emerged as the only candidate established ahead of all five. Freiburg and Innsbruck remained unordered against one another; Quebec City, Colmar and Annecy remained unordered among themselves.

First Edition · September 2026
The Fall Practical Companion begins where the choice ended. It is a guide to spending September, October and November living in Gundeldingen rather than visiting Basel: the apartment, the markets, the run from the door, the transport pass, the three-country harvest country, the way home, guests, healthcare, language, and the question the season eventually has to answer: does the ordinary week still work in November, when it is dark by five?
